It’s that time of year again!!!

The summer is starting to fade and school is on the horizon.   That means it’s time to start Cub Scout recruitment.  Doug Hirth is off and running getting our recruitment nights lined up.   Join us on Tuesday, August 10, at 6:45 PM at Cub Scout Roundtable.   Be sure your Cubmaster, Committee Chair or Pack Membership Chair is at the August Roundtable to pick up your recruitment materials and talk about Cub Scout recruitment.

Do you believe in Scouting?

The obvious answer is yes; otherwise you would not be a volunteer. But, do you really believe in scouting? Do you believe that every boy should have the opportunity to try out scouting?  If the answer is no then go back to whatever you were doing. If the answer is yes then please consider how your unit can make contact with every and any available young man who might benefit from the major elements of scouting: the outdoor program, character development, personal advancement and recognition as well as patriotism and fitness.

The Carroll District will sponsor a weekend “Shouting for Scouting Expo” August 28 (10 am to 4 pm) at the Town Mall of Westminster .

Policy Change: Youth Protection Training

Youth safety is the No. 1 concern of the BSA.

To increase awareness of this societal problem and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies.

Effective June 1, 2010:

  • Youth Protection training is required for all registered volunteers.
  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before they submit an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.

Under Armour Action Uniform Pilot - BAC Exclusive

Navy Honors 100 Years of Scouting With Event Aboard the World’s Largest Hospital Ship

Baltimore Navy Week hosts the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America aboard the USNS COMFORT HOSPITAL SHIP back in Baltimore after saving thousands of lives during Haiti earthquake relief. 

Who: Baltimore Navy Week Flag Ambassador, Rear Adm. Scott A. Weikert, Deputy Commander of the First Naval Construction Division, Norfolk, VA (Seabees); Boy Scout Executive and CEO; USNS Comfort Captain; local Eagle Scouts; Baltimore area Scouts; Navy Sailors.

Why: To tell the Navy story to Marylanders and give them the chance to talk to Naval Officers and Sailors about the importance of leadership and the Navy’s evolving mission in 2010, and beyond.

Leave No Trace - Trainer Course

"The Boy Scouts of America has adopted the principles of Leave No Trace, which are easy to learn and apply.  Every outing and activity should be conducted with Leave No Trace in mind.  As young people mature, we will enjoy an increasingly beautiful environment because of the impact of their training in Leave No Trace.  As members of the Boy Scouts of America, we should be good stewards of our environment through knowledgeable use of resources.  ...  We all must take responsibility for our decisions when we use the outdoors, and we should treat the environment with respect so future generations can enjoy the outdoors as we do today." - Teaching Leave No Trace (BSA No. 21-117)

The youth leaders of a busy outdoor adventure program must be able to apply Leave No Trace to a variety of activities in differing environments during all seasons of the year; all done in the company of Scouting youth and adults with varying levels of outdoor skills, self discipline, and commitment to an outdoor ethic.

This course is designed to train older youth (age 14 and older) and adults to serve as Leave No Trace Trainers for Scouting and the wider public.  For a Scout to serve as a Leave No Trace Trainer, he must complete the Leave No Trace Trainer Course.

34th Annual Maryland Scout Orienteering Day

The 34th Annual Maryland Scout Orienteering Day is proud to join in Baltimore Area Council's fall celebration of Scouting's 100th anniversary.  Last year we had about 750 orienteers and 325 campers participate in this one-day event.  

Your Troop or Venture unit is invited to BAC’s annual day of instruction and fun in orienteering (“O’”).  Girl Scouts age 10 thru 17 and BSA or GSUSA leaders and parents are encouraged to take part; not Cubs or Webelos. Venture (<18) can compete as a unit or as part of their associated troop.  Camping is available Friday-Sunday right at the event site, but you must register to camp in advance using the registration form.
